There is a shortage of secondary STEM teachers, including computer science teachers, and a renewed focus on recruitment and retention of teachers. The purpose of this study is to explore the professional motivations of current computer science teachers at the secondary level. This study involved phenomenological interviews of eight secondary computer science teachers in Pennsylvania. The teachers were chosen for maximum variation in their perspectives. The interviews were coded using emergent coding for common themes. The themes that surfaced were: doing what’s best for students, love of the subject and a desire to have an impact on the future. When an administrator is seeking a candidate among current teachers they can look for one who: enjoys autonomy, creates curriculum materials, has positive relationships with students in addition to demonstrating computer literacy. The administrator should ask a teacher to take on the role of computer science teacher, as that was revealed by many of the interviewed teachers as the pivotal moment in their decision making process. When seeking new teachers from those people currently working in the fields of computer science or information technology, the administrator should take care to ensure the candidate has a strong and genuine desire to work with students, fully understands the scope and nature of the work of a teacher in that district or school, and is aware of communities of practice to combat isolation.
